SEATTLE – Six of the top 10 most popular Ethiopian websites are a constellation of pro-democracy online newsletters virtually inaccessible in Ethiopia. Ethiomedia, which is top of the list, ranks 72,000th, thus qualifying it as member of the 100,000 popular websites in the world.
Second most popular Ethiopian website at 108,000 is CyberEthiopia, which is a mix of news search engine, a forum and a site. Nazret.com comes in third at 133,000, closely followed by EthioIndex at 150,000, another popular service which is a blend of news search engine and selected publications.
Ethiopian Media Forum (EMF) stands 5th at 161,000. What is unique to EMF is that it has outsmarted all pro-tyranny websites and burst through the ranks to the top. Given that EMF was launched only nine months ago by a group of journalists in exile, its swift move up the ladder certifies its growing popularity.
By most accounts, Ethiopian Review (ER) could be one of the top six, though it's hard to know ER's exact rank as it is hosted by the giant Homestead.com. Therefore, ER's rank is left blank.
Seventh is the state-owned Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) at 171,000. Following is the list of the top 10 websites.
- Ethiomedia - 72,000
- CyberEthiopia -108,000
- Nazret - 133,000
- EthioIndex - 150,000
- EthioForum - 161,000
- Ethiopian Review - ?
(The above six pro-democracy websites are blocked in Ethiopia. And the government is the only in Africa to resort to cyber censorship as the ultimate assault on Press Freedom, in addition to locking up most of the journalists who were running the private media.)
- ENA - 171,000 - State-controlled news agency
- Ethiopian Reporter - 206,000 - subservient to tyrannical regime
- EthiopiaFirst (Ben's) - 217,000 - subservient to tyrannical regime
- WaltaInfo - 258,000 - Ruling party's website
The following is also struggling to improve ranks:
- EthioLion - 267,000
The following have very limited visitors:
- AigaForum - 402,000
- Debteraw - 475,000
*Ranks are rounded off to the nearest 1000th.Websites ranked above half a million on the Alexa.com tool bar are excluded because of almost negligible number of hits. Ranks do not imply they would stay that way permanently. Performance is the key to each website's chance of rising through the ranks or sliding back into oblivion.
