ADDIS ABABA - Kokebe Tibah (KeHas) and Tikur Ambessa and Menilik school students clashed with Federal Police members during lunch time Friday when the government forces surrounded the schools to intimidate afternoon-shift students. Ayer Tena students High School students also clashed with the Federal police.
The Addis Ababa police were given new jackets similar to the notorious Federal Police which observers say was done to purposely create public hostility toward the Addis Ababa police. However, observers say it was easy for city residents to isolate the Addis Police from the Federal ones by the degree of brutuality they inflict on the civilian population and not by what they were. Prefering to stay with the people, most of the brand new jackets of Addis Ababa police ended up in markets and were selling less than their original Birr 250 price.
Meanwhile on Thursday,
The EPRDF government turned its face from teachers to students, and hand-picked 4-6 students from each school allegedly as representing the student communities to a gathering at City Hall. The so-called representatives were all hand-picked by EPRDF Cadres. All this is taking place without the knowledge of the families or parents of students.
University and high school students have been formidable opponents of the Meles Zenawi regime whose 14 years of stay in power could be ascribed to sheer ruthlessness, spreading fear and terror as well as high-level media manipulation aimed at throwing the nation of over 73 million into confusion.
