Ethiopian Monastery in Jerusalem sparks debate
June 6, 2003
The historic Ethiopian Monastery in Jerusalem has grabbed attention wide and far following an outbreak of conflict between the Ethiopian defenders of the Monastery known as Deir el-Sultan and their Egyptian rivals. Egypt, through its newspaperAl-Ahram and her president, Mubarak, are seen lobbying in defense of the interest of their monks and nuns to take over the Ethiopian monastery. Other non-Ethiopians with a history of the monastery are also rallying to defend the Ethiopian faithful in Jerusalem. The following links show how the issue has become a hotspot in some circles. Ethiomedia thanks our contributor Mekonen for bringing the topic to our attention. We hope Ethiopian scholars on the subject will have a word or two on the historic Ethiopian Monastery that is being cornered in Jerusalem.
