Many home fans based their confidence on the Liberia vs Nigeria female soccer encounter last year in Monrovia, when despite an early lead by the falcons, the Lone Star girls found an equalizer through Christina Myers and forced the Nigerians to a one-all draw.
But later did the home fans got to know that the Ethiopians were out for business when they increased the score through another skillful and stylish player, Birtukan Gebrekirstor, who netted in the second goal for the visitors.
By then the home fans were left with no alternative but switch support to the Ethiopians when player Helen Siefu came from the substitution bench to increase the pressure against the Liberian female team.
Shetaye Sizay, Teramage Tesfaye, Hiwot Regu of the visiting side could not relax in the distribution of the ball that rested under the control of Helen Siefu when she cleverly dribbled two Liberian defenders plus goalkeeper Miatta Jallabah and hit the ball into the net to register the third goal for Ethiopia.
In the early minutes of the first half, the Liberian girls wasted several chances through striker Kpannah Sayon. Though the team put up a beautiful ball passion, it could not maintain the challenge due to stiff resistance from the Ethiopians.
Monica Cooper, Amelia Washington, Christiana Myers, Patricia Williams of Liberia led the attack against their opponents, but they failed to find the back of the net.
Ten minutes before the end of the match, the Liberian technical staff brought in Iareline Tolbert, who came on the pitch in tears due to the late change.
Tolbert made an attempt for goal through a powerful shot, but the ball flow over the goalpost posing no threat to the Ethiopians, who were already in a comfortable position in the dire minutes when the referee sounded the whistle to end the full 90 minutes of play.
Liberia would now have to prepare adequately for the return match in Ethiopia in coming weeks.
