A new approach to HIV treatment

According to the UN, well over 50 million people are living with HIV/AIDS today, by the time you will finish reading this article perhaps at least 40 more people would be infected with the killer virus. WHO says, HIV is hitting rural Africa worse than never before, it has become a chain reaction of infectivity. The AIDS death statistics in Africa is appalling and it signals a need to rethink HIV treatment, thinking just a little bit outside the box and harness existing technologies to improve the quality of life for those infected.

Just a niche of the entire world population can afford a complete HIV/AIDS ARV treatment which also requires a costly yearly drug resistance test, worse off those living in developing nations. For several reasons, patients are only put on ARV treatment when their CD4 count has dropped to a critically near death point, below 250 and unfortunately most won’t survive longer after that. A logical and simple solution could be to come up with an alternative, usable at any stage of infection. Providing those living HIV+ with a non-toxic alternative to help control the HIV progression and also prevent or delay the CD4/immune deterioration to the near death point. Surely this will help to prolong life and lessen the agony people are going through.

At SAVEC HEALTH SYSTEMS in Belfast UK, we spent over two years researching and developing new ways to improve the quality of life for HIV sufferers. Following own research and others from different institutions and universities, we have come up with a low cost medical device (HiCare) that incorporates five therapeutic applications all designed to target HIV/AIDS and aiding the immune system. The chances of a HIV vaccine in the near future are very slim, it is therefore vital that new and existing technologies are effectively implemented.

HIV being a retrovirus, most patients would definitely need more than just drugs to combat it. Just like all Cancers caused by retroviruses, drugs alone were never going to get this world any closer to winning the battle against Cancer. To date there are several therapies for Cancer, (from Nuclear Medicine to Gene Therapy), yet for HIV we have been stuck on drugs alone for longer than 15 years. Without these new effective alternatives, more and more Africans will keep dying, leaving hopeless orphans behind.
