First Nigist Selfu radio show begins this Saturday

SEATTLE – Acclaimed Ethiopian radio journalist Nigist Selfu will start broadcasting programs in Amharic on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 to 10:00 PM on KLFE 1590 AM.

Well-read and widely travelled, the Nigist Nelfu Show is eagerly expected to spice up weekend life by offering various entertainment programs. Her colleagues at Ethiomedia use the occasion to congratulate Nigist, and call on listeners to tune in and enjoy the maiden programs by the affable journalist.

About the Show

The show will be aired every Saturday and Sunday between 9:00 and 10:00 PM on KLFE 1590 AM starting from March 20, 2010. Its main goal is to enhance life, educate, entertain, empower, broaden perspectives, create joy, and expand knowledge. And through its endeavors it tries to connect people to each other and their country of origin. Even though the show is geared to the Ethiopian community who lives in the Puget Sound area in Washington State, it will be available worldwide on the internet soon.

Thematically it is divided into two distinct parts. While the Saturday shows entitled (ሕይወት በአሜሪካ)focus on life in America, the Sunday ones named (ኢትዮጵያ በበራሪ) take us back home. Its formatting being a variety show, the program attempts to encompass all issues related to the following:

  • News from Ethiopia & Community news
  • Socio-cultural issues
  • Legal and Immigration issues
  • Education and employment opportunities
  • Health and wellness
  • Interview with community leaders, dignitaries and celebrities
  • Success stories
  • Entertainment

About Nigist

Nigist Selfu started her career as a journalist at the Ethiopian Radio in 1987 and risen through the ranks to eventually become Editor-in-Chief at the Ethiopian Television. Over the years, she had the chance to talk to both ordinary people and heads of state, to experience different cultures, and visit every corner of Ethiopia. She also spent time in more than 25 other countries in Africa, North America, Europe, and the Middle and Far East. Besides her professional contributions, Nigist had been active with a variety of organizations that address the political, social, and environmental issues.

Nigist’s diverse background and interests are among her stronger aspects in her goal to host a radio show. She was born in Addis Ababa, and grew up in different parts of the country moving with her family. She completed her secondary education at Ambo High School and joined the Addis Ababa University from where she majored in Foreign Languages & Literature (English). Later on, she received Master’s degree in Gender Studies from same university.

She currently lives in Seattle with her husband and a 16-year-old son and 14-year-old daughter.
