Remembering the Martyrs of Democracy

ADDIS ABABA – On June 8, 2005 the Ethiopian capital rattled to the sound of gunfire. There was a massacre of unarmed civilians who were protesting against the regime which stole an election. Four harrowing years later, images of wailing mothers who lost their loved ones remain etched in the minds of Ethiopians. Worldwide commemoration is under way on June 7, 2009. The struggle for democracy and justice continues in the face of a formidable enemy now in power for 18 years – and has no intention to transfer power peacefully to the Ethiopian people.
