Travel Guide | April 8, 2014 Defiant Dessie Fired Up for Change Says No to EPRDF Dictatorship, Brutality, Corruption and Pestilence! Ethiomedia April 8, 2014 ADDIS ABABA – After a huge Bahrdar Protest Rally last February, opposition stronghold Dessie followed suit, and on April 6 erupted in protest against EPRDF rule marked by brutality, poverty, corruption and social pestilence. The demonstrators chanted against the use of state ownership of land as a political weapon to bring them under ruling party servitude. The demonstrators, who often called for the release of all political prisoners and prisoners of conscience, mocked at the government’s hollow claim of a double-digit growth while poverty has gone wild and sordid under EPRDF’s over two decades of misrule. Charismatic Andinet leaders such as Habtamu Ayalew inspired the protesters to stand up for what is right and just. “Freedom is earned, not begged!” Habtamu chanted as the huge crowd repeated with thunderous echo. Defiant from the start way back in the early ’90s, Dessie is an opposition stronghold that serves as a city of hope for a better Ethiopia! Ethiomedia.com – An African-American news and views website.
