It is imperative to know that by registering to vote in our state, we can be in a position to influence policy at both the state and national levels.
The Ethiopian American population is growing each year, with tremendous potential to wield political power both locally and nationally. To date, the contributions of Ethiopian Americans to the United States have been significant in all levels. One finds Ethiopians in the most prestigious learning institutions, big corporations, small business, and so on. However, we have not yet used our collective strength to have a powerful voice in the United States, as other ethnic groups do. One of our shortcomings is our failure to register to vote in mass numbers.
We, the Ethiopian American Council, therefore strongly urge those who have not yet registered to do so before the November 2004 national election. It is a right that so many of our people lack in Ethiopia. It is a right that is gained through the long and hard struggle of the African Americans in the 60s. We must exercise our right to vote, for it is a powerful political weapon we must not take for granted.
