The Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) said the quake lasted 19 seconds and was felt very well in the Hossana area.
“Some traditional old earthen houses were demolished and those houses built with modern materials were left with cracks in the walls,” ENA reported.
Residents in the nearest biggest town of Awassa told Ethiomedia they didn’t feel the quake at all.

Ethiopia is a seismic active area with parts of the country located on the Great Rift valley. Also Addis Ababa, a city of millions, is highly at risk for a major earthquake. Seismologists do insist to apply strict earthquake-proof building rules.
“An earthquake in Ethiopia may feel unusual. However, the country has experienced from time to time earthquakes measuring over 6 points on the Richter Scale.”
In the recent past Ethiopia had M6+ earthquakes in 1906, 1961, 1969, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1989, 1993 and 1999, according to Earthquake-report.
