SAN JOSE, California – Six-year-old Mahder Aklilu is among the top 14 finalists of over 4,000 children who took part in the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Children’s Art Project.

Mahder’s painting portrays America as a boat of immigrants sailing on crystal-clear blue waters. The beautiful American flag flies high on the mast.

Are we having a precoscious child? The USCIS answers:

“More than 4000 children from across the nation put their ideas on paper about this year’s theme: “We Are America.” They drew, painted, and collaged images that answered the question “People have come from all over the world to become Americans. Why does that make us great?”

“The artwork is being displayed in USCIS offices across the country. Visit this page for information on Open Houses when you can visit the displayed works of these talented, 5 to 12 year old artists. Additionally, some selected works are on display in our electronic Art Gallery.”

Born in Berlin, Germany, into the family of Teklu Aklilu and Mihret, the gifted Mahder arrived in the U.S. with her parents as a two-year-old toddler when she began to show talents in the arts.

Mahder is not only limited to drawing. She is also gifted in music. And plays on instruments, like piano. Then, are we having a child virtuoso?

“Next weeak Maheder will also play on the piano at the San Jose Center for Performing Arts,” says Mihret, the jubilant mom of the beautiful kid. “I have tried to engage my daughter in extra-curricular activities not because I’ve an extra money or time but because of my conviction that if we support our kids, they can explore their unique talents.”

America is definitely not a hassle-free society but how many parents manage their time in a bid to help their children tap into their hidden talents?

On this occasion, Ethiomedia extends our congratulations to Mahder, and of course to the entire family. Also,
look at the drawings by the 14 finalists.
