Meles Zenawi pours troops into defiant Tembien

February 5, 2005

Mekelle – Over 2000 government troops have laid seige to the northern Ethiopian town of Abi Adi in Tigrai region in a bid to crush ongoing public resistance. The troops arrived in Aby Adi three days after a meeting between regional administrator Tseggai Berhe and the residents of the town failed.

Earlier in Aby Adi, Tsegai had vented his frustrations at the people, warning them their defiant mood to hold Abi Adi a “no-election zone” would bring dire consequences.

The people of Tembien, who since last year have been at loggerheads with the Meles Zenawi regime over failed calls for the building of basic amenities like running water and power, said they would never allow themselves to be pawns in fake election exercises.

Meanwhile, organizers of the Aby Adi protest have fled to the Sudan after security forces launched a witch-hunt for the arrest of the activists. Among the organizers who fled to Sudan is Woldai Cha’e, the chief architect of the protest. Several government attempts to divide the people have failed. (Based on a report by Dekialula)
