Meles
Zenawi’s guards behind bars

ION: December 17, 2004

A group of soldiers responsible for the security of Prime
Minister Meles Zenawi
is behind bars inside the palace where the PM
has his offices. Some fifteen commandos specially trained in combat were
recently jailed because they wanted to leave the army at the end of their
seven-year contract, as they are entitled by law.

These soldiers first wrote to their commander informing him that they
wanted to leave the army. But, two weeks later, they were summoned and
imprisoned in the Prime Minister’s residence, where they are still being
held without trial and without anyone knowing of what is in store for
them. Those imprisoned include the soldiers Kiberabe Hadushe, Yemane
Bekele, Terfe, Mehirt Ayhu Leguesse, Kassa Zegue, Samson Afewerk. At least
one of them is accused of desertion after stealing two AK-47 assault guns.
