Ethiopians in New York City call for protest at Columbia

Editor’s Note:

Jeffrey D. Sachs, Director of the Earth Institute, Quetelet Professor of Sustainable Development, and Professor of Health Policy and Management; and Joseph E. Stiglitz, a Professor of Finance and Business and Chair of the University’s Committee on Global Thought at Columbia University have been strong supporters of Meles Zenawi. Every time the dictator is in trouble, the two professors have come to his rescue.

Right after Zenawi was humiliated in the 2005 elections, when he ordered the massacre of 193 peaceful protesters, Jeffrey Sachs helped the dictator get international attention by supporting his nomination for the Yara Prize. This year, Stiglitz’s committee gave Zenawi much needed recognition by inviting him to be a keynote speaker on September 22, 2010, at the opening ceremony of a seminar series at Columbia.

Sachs was named among the 100 most influential leaders in the world by Time Magazine in 2004 and 2005. Stiglitz is a Nobel Prize winner, and has held high-level government positions in the Clinton administration. Zenawi has effectively used the celebrity status of the two individuals to promote his failed economic policies, the politics of ethnicity, and disastrous foreign adventures.

While pro-democracy Ethiopians expect the learned men to help them end Zenawi’s brutal rule, to invite him to a reputed community of scholarship is clearly an insult to humanity.
