SEATTLE – Pro-democracy Ethiopians will join Egyptian demonstrators here in Seattle on Saturday in a rare show of solidarity with the Egyptian people’s quest for democracy and the ouster of the autocratic regime of President Hosni Mubarak.
The demonstration will start at 11:30 AM at Westlake Center in downtown Seattle, and organizers called on all Ethiopians to come to the rally.
What is going on in Egypt or Tunisia or Yemen these days is an uprising for democracy and justice over tyranny, and this is a global phenomenon of our times that we couldn’t leave to specific countries, a source close to the organizers said.
“The struggle is as much to Egypt as it is to Ethiopia. Poverty, unemployment, corruption and political repression are the shared features of those countries. If popular uprisings are sweeping the Arab world, it is a matter of time that they would shake the foundations of dictatorial regimes anywhere in the world,” the source said.
Prime Minister Meles Zenawi has ruled Ethiopia with an iron fist since 1991, and there is no sign in sight that he would step down with honor.
