Solutions through inclusive negotiation, not a kangaroo court

US Embassy Charges d'affaires Vicki Huddleston
Trial of opposition activists
“divisive.”

We are pleased that the United States is “gravely concerned” about the imprisonment of
CUDP leaders, journalists and civic society leaders by the government of Ethiopia. We
also welcome Ambassador Vicki Huddleston’s description of the regime as “divisive”
for its decision to try 129 opposition leaders, journalists and local aid workers, on
charges that include treason and genocide. We agree with the Ambassador, that what
Ethiopia needs today is “reconciliation and communication.”

We are concerned by the repeated demand for “a fair, transparent and speedy trial for those charged” by the international community and by the government of the US. We want to reiterate to all concerned that the problem in Ethiopia is a political problem that emanated from the May election. The political problem in Ethiopia can not be resolved in a court room even if there was a “fair and transparent” process.

The CUDP leaders and the thousands that languish in jail have committed no crime. Courts are for criminals and not for political adversaries. Political disputes are best resolved around a table through negotiations. We encourage the international community to accept the fact that these are political prisoners who need to be released immediately and unconditionally. Only then will credible and constructive negotiations be possible.

We are aware of the effort by some in the international community to mediate between the government and some of the opposition. We support any effort to bring all the stakeholders to the table to find a lasting and equitable solution. However for the process to be credible it has to be transparent and get the support of the Ethiopian people. We want to strongly state that any dialogue or negotiation without CUDP will not be acceptable to the Ethiopian people. CUDP’s contribution and the consent of the Ethiopian people are essential for the stability of Ethiopia and the resumption of the democratic process.
