Hundreds of Somalis on May 19, 2007 protested against Somalia’s invasion by Meles Zenawi. One placard reads: “Meles is wanted for war crimes.”

LONDON – Hundreds of Somalis marched in street of London on May 19 against US-sponsored Meles Zenawi’s invasion of Somalia.

The protesters marched from No 10 Downing Street to Parliament Square, chanting: “Stop US-sponsored Meles mercenary war of Somalia.” The protesters displayed pictures exposing the death and destruction caused by Melas’s misguided and conscripted soldiers in Somalia.

The protesters submitted petition to outgoing UK prime minister office, demanding full investigation of war crimes that took place in Somalia during the Meles invasion on Somalia. They also demanded to stop any kind of support to Melas regime and to be held accountable for the crimes he committed against his fellow citizens and Somali people.

Organisers of the march, including freelance journalist Abdirahman Warsame, who submitted the petition to the Prime minister office said:
“We want immediate withdraw without condition of Melas soldiers from Somalia and we will continue to press this issue until last soldier of Meles pulls out from Somalia.”

European lawyers are examining whether alleged war crimes committed by Ethiopian and Somali troops in Mogadishu could expose the EU to accusations of complicity because of its formidable financial assistance to the two countries, the Guardian reported.

A massive Ethiopian-led offensive to pacify an insurgency in the Somali capital left nearly hundreds dead. Human rights groups say many of the victims were civilians and accuse the Ethiopians of using tanks and attack helicopters to fire indiscriminately into densely populated areas. Some analysts in Somalia have backed the war crimes allegations, saying that specific clans in Mogadishu have been targeted for “cleansing” by pro-government forces, said the paper.
