Ethiopia: Muslim leaders uphold demands despite torture
By Ethiomedia January 10, 2014 Jailed Ethiopian Muslim leaders who are being tortured and tormented in prison have called on Muslims and Christians to remain united despite the government’s attempts to incite “intra-Muslim and inter-religion violence.” In a statement sent to Ethiomedia.com on Thursday, the Ethiopian Muslims, who have time and again upheld democratic and peaceful ideals contained in the contitution, accused the government of being the number violator of the constitution. “The government that was supposed to promote peaceful co-existence among different nationalities and religions was, and still is, engaged in efforts to incite intra-Muslim as well as inter-religion violence. This dangerous and ignominious move could only be foiled with the maturity and moral strength of our people,” the statement said. The Muslim leaders and supporters have been subjected to extremely cruel forms of torture, including hanging inmates upside down, whipping their bare feet, bruising their backs with lashes, kicking them in their private parts while making them stand upright for up to 14 hours without any break whatsoever. The inhuman and cruel forms of torture are accompanied by threats like “we will kill your child! We will torture your wife in front of you! We will hang a bottle full of water on your private part and make you sterile!” Despite a nation which despises the government as a dangerous rogue regime, the government projects itself to the outside world as a guardian of peace and democracy in the region.
