Guji onslaught on Burji: update on the proxy war of ethnic cleansing

Four days ago I wrote a letter to the Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice about the on-going political, cultural, economic and the national destruction of Ethiopia. I was candid about the role I felt the United States has played in facilitating the current thugs in Addis Ababa to bring Ethiopia to the current state of degradation. While I feel it is legitimate to lay some blame on the Bush Administration for emboldening the Meles regime in their systematic dismantling of the social fabric of Ethiopians and the sovereignty of Ethiopia, ultimately Ethiopians must take the majority of the blame for the sorry state of affairs!

Meles and his TPLF have never made any secret about their scheme against Ethiopia! They sought and obtained the co-operation from the rest of the country, notably the OLF, in instituting the most subversive constitution imaginable. Once they got that out of the way, they were done with the OLF and the rest is history! The systematic purging of the communities which showed any resistance to their thuggish rule has been well documented:

  1. The massacre of the Anuaks;
  2. On going purge of the Oromos using their OLF support as the main excuse;
  3. The ongoing genocide in Ogaden;
  4. Atrocities against the people of the various ethnic background throughout the country; and
  5. Blaming natural disasters such as failed rainfall while the country’s thousands of square miles of arable land in Ethiopia lie fallow, thus condemning millions of Ethiopians to recurrent seasons of slow deaths by starvation.

What is often overlooked in this statistic is the effect of the regime’s policy of dividing ethnic groups against each other and sowing seeds of discord between them. The regime’s enforcement of the law and order begins and ends with protecting the its tenacious grip on power in Ethiopia, while ensuring smooth and relentless dismantling Ethiopia as a sovereign state!

While a large defiant resistance to the regime usually came face to face with a swift, massive, and often violent response from the regime, its preferred method of dismantling Ethiopia seems to be by cleverly turning neighboring ethnic communities against each other, so that the regime itself feels free of any blame while Ethiopians slowly but surely dismantle their Motherland and their neighbors – their brothers and sisters (their compatriots)!

This has led to recurrent harassment of one ethnic group against another (usually the weaker and/or the less connected to the administration). Bloodying confrontations between the ethnic groups is the order of the day! Having set up the enduring system of mutual destruction between the ethnic groups, the administration now acts as a “neutral arbitrator” calming the tense situations between the warring parties, usually by sending out a handful of minimally armed forces to separate the warring tribes! By the time the skirmish has subsided, usually, tens if not hundreds would have lost their lives and their property destroyed!

The warring parties go away to prepare for another revenge war at a suitable time, hence, a self perpetuating cycle! The administration, which has much to gain by having these tribes fight each other,(rather than fighting them) is invariably the winner every time these skirmishes occur without incurring any cost, and while appearing to be the neutral party in these atrocities! Meanwhile here are some consequences for the warring tribes:

  1. Senseless loss of human lives – usually young men who are pillars of the society;
  2. Destruction of property – rendering the already poor communities even poorer and more insecure;
  3. Channeling money, material and human resources in preparation and execution of never ending cycles skirmishes between ethnic groups;
  4. Failure to develop enough food production because of #3;
  5. Failure to educate children, perpetuating ignorance and primitive values because of #3;
  6. Failure to develop the infrastructure to support development because of #3;
  7. Failure of the Ethiopians to come across tribal divide for the benefit of their communities because of #3;
  8. Failure to understand the regime’s devious scheme and throw off a pernicious, despicable dictatorship and unite as Ethiopian brethren and as compatriots for the benefit of all due to #3;
  9. Failure to understand the regime’s devious scheme and protect the Sovereignty of Ethiopia while the evil regime repeatedly dismembered Ethiopian territory to bribe the neighboring often hostile regimes (e.g. Eritrea and Sudan) because of #3;
  10. Failure to unite and demand justice for icons for Ethiopia’s freedom and justice (e.g. the on-going Kangaroo Court proceedings against Teddy Afro and his defense attorney) because of #3;

In the case of the on-going assault of the Guji on the Burji around the Soyoma Township in Sidamo, the pattern is a familiar one as outlined above! This is the third attack on the peaceful Burji community in the last two years. On Wednesday of last week, well over 60 truck-loads of Guji warriors armed with sophisticated weapons invaded the unsuspecting Burji, killing 3 people and wounding one. The Burji who are much less in number than the Guji, having been primed by the previous invasions responded briskly, halting their advance. Reports reaching us from the area suggest that more armed Guji are pouring into the war front. The Guji have apparently sworn to take the town of Soyoma come-what-may! There is absolutely no attempt by the regime to stop arrest or apprehend the Guji invading army!

After the Burji complained to the authorities in Addis Ababa a handful of military personnel were dispatched to the front to advice the Burji, (not the Guji) to withdraw from their defensive positions! This led to a fiery exchange between the administration personnel and the Burji defendants. They stood their ground to continue defense of their community! How long they can hold off the on-slaught is a matter of serious concern! As of now there is a lull in the fighting at the front as the Guji bring in their reinforcements. Report reaching us suggests heavy machine guns and mortar are being moved to the front by the Guji! Where they get this sophisticated weaponry and how they manage to transport it to a war front against innocent citizens of Ethiopia without the some level of collusion with the regime is difficult to imagine!

Meanwhile in the town of Hagere-Mariam, there is a lock-down for the Burji community! The Guji are on the look-out for the Burji and a friendly fire has been responsible for one Guji death so far. The Burji community has not been able to take out their animals for grazing, Burji children have not been able to go to school, and men stay at home with whatever weapon they can find to protect their families. The government, after some begging, apparently promised to send in the security reinforcement to Hagere-Mariam as of yesterday, August 9, 2008. This is supposed to bring the total security forces in the town to a grand total of 200 men/women, to fight off an invading army which is counted in thousands.

There, in a nutshell is the mechanics of how the thugs in Addis Ababa are using the ethnic groups of Ethiopia against each other to dismantle Ethiopia. This mechanism is probably more effective, in their scheme of dismantling the fabric of Ethiopian society, than their frontal assault on these communities – it does not cost them anything, it is guaranteed to self perpetuate as killings beget revenge killings, it is low volume and therefore does stay below the radar screen, and it is the people killing each other and the government is not responsible!

Whether it is fight over grazing land, farmland, watering-holes, job opportunities, trade, etc., this is a cost-effective way for the thuggish regime destroy Ethiopia, and the country so far has obliged!
