During his stay in Ethiopia Dr. Daulaire will officially inaugurate the Bahir Dar Regional Laboratory. The construction was funded with USD 2.79 million of U.S. Government assistance. The new Bahir Dar Regional Laboratory will serve more than 10 million people in Western Amhara and will be a center of excellence for the development of laboratory systems in the region. The laboratory will help detect and monitor diseases of public health importance and will play a crucial role in the emergency management of outbreaks and in surveillance activities for a range of diseases, including HIV/AIDS.
Dr. Daulaire will also visit Arba Minch to break ground on the construction of the Arba Minch Laboratory and Outpatient Department. This project is estimated to cost USD 2.25 million and will be funded by the U.S. Government. This health facility will serve more than 2.2 million people within Gamo Gofa and neighboring zones and woredas.
Dr. Daulaire will also visit malaria control and prevention activities at local health centers supported by the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative.
Dr. Daulaire was appointed by Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to serve the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as Director of the Office of Global Health Affairs on March 22, 2010.
