March 6, 2007 ATLANTA, Georgia – Ethiopians and Ethiopian Americans in metropolitan Atlanta vowed to continue their struggle until a popular government that reflects the wishes and aspirations of the Ethiopian people is established. At a solemn candle night vigil they held at Martin Luther King’s Memorial Center last Saturday, the participants expressed in one voice their unabated readiness to wage the struggle even after all political prisoners are released. Some of the participants noted that “although we Ethiopians need to observe 111th victory of the Battle of Adowa with a high sense of jubilation, not a single Ethiopian has the feeling of rejoicing while we have hundreds and hundred of prisoners of conscious under untold sufferings and sever torture at various Woyan’s prison houses. The candle night vigil was officially opened with a prayer by the newly elected Abune Yacob, in charge of the Ethiopian Orthodox churches in Georgia and Tennessee, who stressed the need for unity as a major factor for the prevalence of peace, democracy and social progress in Ethiopia. The gathering also called on to wage a relentless struggle against those elements who exist amongst ourselves and yet work hand and glove with members of the fascistic regime in Addis Ababa. Withstanding the breezing and sometimes gusty winds and bone-chilling weather, participants chanted slogans demanding the unconditional release of all political prisoners and for the establishment of democratic institutions in Ethiopia.
